Approved: Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare Board of Directors Moves to Submit Stage 1.3 Capital Redevelopment Plan

Muskoka and area, ON – October 10, 2024 – Muskoka Algonquin Healthcare (MAHC) is pleased to announce that its Board of Directors has approved the Stage 1.3 capital redevelopment plan submission, marking a major step toward enhancing healthcare services for Muskoka and the surrounding areas. The approval will enable MAHC to move forward with the Ministry of Health submission, paving the way for the development of the multi-site regional hospital.

The board’s decision follows extensive consultation and analysis, including strong community feedback and endorsement from key stakeholders. The plan includes the recommendation to add 10 new beds to the Bracebridge site, bringing the total number of beds to 46. This adjustment ensures that MAHC is addressing the future healthcare needs of the region while maintaining high standards of patient care.

“Today’s vote is an important step toward the future of healthcare in Muskoka,” said Carla Ladd, Chair of the Capital Redevelopment Steering Committee and Vice Chair of the Board. “The approval of the Stage 1.3 submission demonstrates our continued commitment to delivering sustainable healthcare solutions and ensuring that the needs of our community are met. At the end of the day, this is all about our patients. It’s great that we will renew these buildings, but more importantly, there will be more services and markedly better care at both hospitals”.

Board Chair Dave Uffelmann added, “This decision reflects the board’s strong belief in the plan’s vision for Muskoka’s healthcare system. It is a testament to the tireless efforts of so many at MAHC, including the capital redevelopment planning team and our board, as well as the dedication of past MAHC boards, board chairs, management teams, and many stakeholders over the past decade. Their collective work has laid the foundation for this crucial moment, and we are now well-positioned to move forward in addressing the region’s healthcare needs.”

The submission to Ontario Health Central Region and the Ministry of Health is expected to be filed in early November and represents a pivotal step in the long-term vision for healthcare in the region. A letter of support from 45 South Muskoka physicians, along with endorsements from M.P.P. Graydon Smith and other local politicians and community members, highlights the positive momentum behind the plan. This support underscores the broad engagement and collaboration efforts that have made this project a priority for Muskoka and area.

Next Steps

Following the board’s approval, MAHC will finalize the Stage 1.3 submission and formally present it to the Ministry of Health. The capital redevelopment plan will continue to involve comprehensive engagement with stakeholders, ensuring that the evolving needs of the community remain central to the project’s development.
